Helping Virginia Animals
Every customer who donates or shops at Furbish Thrift helps us turn “stuff into money” ~ and that goes right back to work for animals. In just over three years, we have distributed $465,288 through programs and grants.
$371,673 IN CASH GRANTS
The William A. Harrison Jr. Foundation makes cash grants to animal welfare organizations around Virginia. We recently concluded our annual grant allocations. Every proposal shared challenges organizations face as they work to save lives. Thanks to your supporter, we funded 16 proposals a total of $62,500.
Since we began, we have distributed almost a half million dollars to animal welfare organizations. We are funding a number of Southwest Virginia groups due to one common factor: lack of financial resources for veterinary care. One proposal shared a visit to the nearest vet was a 150- mile round trip. This compounded the problem of not being able to afford vet services in the first place.
120,000 LBS PET FOOD
We purchase and distribute over 10,000 lbs of free dog and cat food every month, in our own accessible pet food pantry at the store and other food pantries around the city that help those in need.
Furbish Thrift hosts and maintains a freely accessible pet food pantry at our store location stocked with dog and cat food. We currently distribute about 200 pounds of pet food each business day through the store pantry. Those in need can help themselves and those with resources to share can donate food. These community pantries are a highly successful way to support and engage the community. We purchase food in bulk and accept larger donations from manufacturers and retailers, process and redistribute them.
THE BIG FIX
Our program, THE BIG FIX, has funded spay/neuters for more than 850 feral and colony cats and kittens in Richmond and the surrounding counties.
One female cat can produce up to three litters each year, resulting in as many as 200 kittens during her very difficult lifetime. Each of her kittens, and their offspring, would also produce this many cats. So you can see why spaying and neutering is a vital and humane way to get feral colonies stabilized and improve the health of all the pets in the community.
OVER 1000 SHELTER PETS FIXED & ADOPTED
Our FIXIN’ TO GO HOME program funds spay/neuters for hundreds of rescue dogs and cats in eight area shelters ~ over 1000 and counting ~ helping them get adopted faster.
Fixin’ to Go Home lets the shelters get the dogs spayed or neutered as soon as possible, so that they’re ready to go home immediately when their new person shows up, and the cost of adoption is more affordable since that care is paid for. It’s a simple step that saves lives, gets dogs into loving homes faster, and frees up space for other animals in need.
